About the Alliance
The Alliance for Sound Energy Policy believes prosperity and environmental stewardship stem from sound energy policies, which require the fair and uniform application of Kansas statutes, regulations and rules. Sensible and balanced energy policies safeguard public health, protect consumers, utilize domestic resources, and integrate renewable energy solutions.
What does a Sound Energy Policy mean for you?
Four ideas—security, affordability, reliability, and environmental stewardship—form the framework under which a balanced energy policy can be developed. We believe that both environmental protection and the electrical generation are vitally important to the future of Kansas, and that neither should be undertaken to the detriment of the other. By planning ahead, the state can ensure that our long-term electricity needs are met with low-cost resources and environmentally-sound policies. Sensible energy policies provide the following:
- Low-cost electricity: Kansas electricity rates are currently among the most affordable in the nation, but if we do not meet our growing demand, prices will rise. Energy prices are high enough already!
- Constant, reliable power: Without electricity, our economy—our very way of life—would cease to exist. America has the energy resources to provide consistent power, even as we continue to demand more. Utilizing diverse sources of energy, Kansas will always be able to provide electricity without interruption.
- Environmental protection: Implementing state-of-the-art technology will safeguard the health of our children. Businesses and industries have recognized the importance of protecting the environment, and great progress has already been made. Of course, there is more work to be done, but the rapid development of green technologies ensures that environmental advancement will continue.
- Alternative energy: Kansas has become a leader in the development of new, renewable energy resources. While we recognize that coal is a vital part of America's electricity supply, we are excited about the prospect of emerging technologies supplementing existing sources.
- National security: America's electricity must be produced domestically. At a time of increasing instability in the world, it is even more apparent that we cannot rely of foreign nations for our energy supply. Thankfully, America has been blessed with a variety of fuel resources, meaning that we should never be forced to look elsewhere for our electricity supplies.
- Consistent policies: Kansas must have a predictable regulatory environment on which business and industry can rely to make investment decisions. Without a sound legal framework upon which our state's policies are based, our energy strategy will be subject to outside political forces that do not have Kansas' best interests at heart.
